Nag Tibba is an easy trek in the Garhwal Himalayas and due to its close proximity to Dehradun. The trek offers spectacular views of Bandarpunch, Kedarnath, Gangotri peaks, the snow peaks of Chanabang and the amazing views of the Doon Valley.
Nag Tibba or Serpent Peak is 3022 m high and is the highest peak of the Nag Tibba Range. The Nag Tibba Range is amongst three principal ranges of the Lesser Himalayas, which includes the Dhauladhar, and the Pir Panjal, which branched off from the Great Himalayas. It is possible to camp at Nag Tibba close to the Nag Devta shrine and it is also possible to hike upto the Nag Tibba top that is a 3 km steep ascend and also the highest point on the mountain.
The dense oak and deodar forests around Nag Tibba have a large population of birds and wildlife. The region is also famous for Himalayan Black Bear, which are often spotted from the campsite.
The trek through Nag Tibba Range, finds mention in the book Seven Years in Tibet, which chronicles the journey of mountaineers, Heinrich Harrer, Peter Aufschnaiter in May 1944, towards Tibet. Bill Aitken, a notable travel writer, also mentions Nag Tibba in his writings as an ideal trek around Mussoorie.
There are a couple of routes to get to Nag Tibba; the first is an 8 km trek via Pantwari Village. The road to Pantwari Village is scenic and takes you through Mussoorie and the famous Kempty Falls. The Second route is a 10 km trek via Devalsari Village and Oothad. The Third option is a 14 km trek via Aunter and Thathyur. The last option is through the Mangalori Village via Thathyur. The last three routes meet up, close to a Gujjar Settlement.
I took the route via Pantwari Village to get to Nag Tibba and returned back to the same village to complete the trek.
